Jacquie Dredge - Committee Member

 | Published on 2/24/2019

Meet Jacquie Dredge, one of Cultivate NSW's committee members. Jacquie (Jaq) is Co-Founder and Director of Panania Free Rangers, a not for profit organisation run by volunteers. She has a background in social and community services working in child care, aged and disability care. Jaq has always been a gardener and tried to sneak gardening activities into every role she's had!

Who is someone you admire, and why?
Jacinda Ardern. To use an overused word the most "inspiring" leader of our time.

What have been the therapeutic benefits of nature/gardens for yourself?
It took me a long time to figure out that I didn't want my work to be in an office. I now go to work and do not feel the stress that being inside sitting on your bum all day brings. I love my veggie patch and growing food that we walk out the door and pick and eat.

Name two plants that you love to grow and why?
I love veggies, I feel enormous satisfaction from a good tomato crop...of which I've had one in the last 3 years and I love the flower and foilage of the artichoke. I don't like cooking very often and don't know how to cook it...I just like the flower and the silvery, waxy leaves. Pumpkins are great too. We did a whole year on a pumpkin crop a few years ago. That's very satisfying.

Where is your favourite place to be in nature?
Tuross Heads to the south and Wooli to the north. Both places where the bush meets the sea and national parks surrounding it. Wildlife, salty sea smells and all the colours of nature in abundance. Makes me feel so blessed to live in Australia...and also has me plotting my escape from the city after every trip!

If you were a tree, what kind would you be, and why?

An oak. For some reason there are lots of English Oaks in our area. I don't know if that has something to do with the people that settled here in the 50's but I grew up with one and there is one in my house around the corner in Panania. I just love the colour and shade of these strong, old trees.

Name a song/artist you've been enjoying listening to lately?
Pist Idiots - local band from Revesby. They are awesome! I feel 19 again when I listen to them.

Your favourite gardening tool and why? old tool that does a great job on whatever you're trying to dig out and a great core workout too :)

Your top 3 favourite podcasts and/or blogs?
Pam Warhurst: How we can eat our landscapes, Elizabeth White: An honest look at the personal finance crisis and Sandi Toksvig: A political party for women's equality....yes all women, taking on the patriarchy in their own way :)
