24th August, 2019
Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney

This year we decided to get ahead of the curve and hold our AGM earlier in the new financial year so that we could take advantage of the momentum created in the preceding eight months.

We were blessed with a fabulous ‘almost’ Spring day that put a bounce in everyone’s step.

The meeting commenced with a presentation by Katrine Mardini, Senior Landscape Architect at Outhouse Design on the creation of The Happy Garden for children and their parents, siblings and carers at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

The garden was created in 2015 and was the brainchild of the wonderful Fairy Sparkle who was a force to be reckoned with when it came to getting donations in the form of services, labour, plants and equipment for the garden. So much so that the entire garden was designed and installed free of charge.

Katrine took us through each stage of the project development from design to completion. Some of the challenges that had to be managed included a very tight project time frame, the weather and some tight spaces in which the construction team had to manoeuvre. However the show had to go on and in a testament to everyone’s commitment and professionalism they made the deadline.

The vision and passion of a very special person, ‘Fairy Sparkle’ had come to fruition.

We were in for yet another treat - not only had we seen her on the screen but then to the absolute delight of everyone present Fairy Sparkle appeared amongst us to tell us how much the garden had meant to her and the children.

The photos below, kindly supplied by Outhouse Design, illustrate some of the story of the transformation of what was an used and rather depressing space into a magical space for children.
